Black Drongo – Kotwal of Birds

Black drongo is a beautiful Indian bird. It is a wholly black bird with a distinctive forked tail. They are aggressive and fearless in nature. Adults usually have a small white spot at the base of the gape and the iris is dark brown in color. The tail is long and deeply forked, and curves out at the end of outer tail feathers. Head is black, with only a very small white patch at Bill’s commissures. Bill is black. Eyes are reddish. Legs and feet are dark grey.

Males and females sing in the mornings during the breeding season. The species is famous for its aggressive behaviour towards much larger birds, such as crows, never hesitating to dive-bomb any birds of prey that invades its territory. Smaller birds such as Bulbuls, Doves, Orioles and Mynas prefer nesting in the well guarded vicinity of a nesting Black Drongo, just to gain protection.  And, this is the reason they are also referred to as ‘kotwal’ (policeman) in Hindi. The little bird gives a fierce, shrill screaming and shoots out like an arrow from a bow. Its aim is true, its beak sharp and the target is the back of the lawbreaker. With the 24-hour security service that comes with the location, birds hatch their eggs in peace.
