As the chill of winter sets in, Sukhna Lake transforms into a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Each year, this serene waterbody welcomes a plethora of migratory birds, turning it into a bustling hub of avian activity. The winter season of 2024-25 was undoubtedly better than the previous years, with an impressive number of winged guests gracing the lake in good numbers. However, this winter season, a remarkable variety of species arrived in good numbers and made their presence felt.

I always look forward to the winter season, eagerly anticipating the arrival of these feathered travellers from various corners of the world and different regions of our country.

Keeping a continuous watch on the avian movements at the lake has been a fulfilling experience. Several species that were previously seen in fewer numbers made a striking comeback this time. The elegant Greylag Goose, Ferruginous Ducks, Northern Pintail, Tufted Ducks, and striking Red-crested Pochard were observed in appreciable numbers.

Other notable winter visitors included Great Cormorants, Ruddy Shelducks, Eurasian Wigeons, Gadwalls, Mallards, Eurasian Coots, Common Pochards, Bar-headed Geese, Northern Shovelers, Garganeys, Common Teals, and the exquisite Great Crested Grebe.

Adding to the charm of the season, Brown-headed Gulls and Pallas’s Gulls made occasional appearances, while the graceful Common Redshanks provided a visual treat with their delicate wading movements along the lake’s shore.

While the migratory birds stole the spotlight, the resident avian species of Sukhna Lake also put up an intriguing show. Unlike the previous year, the Oriental Darter was conspicuously absent, missing from its usual act of expertly catching fish. However, nature never ceases to amaze, and this time, Grey Herons and Black Kites took center stage with their brilliant fishing techniques. Watching a Grey Heron patiently stalking its prey and striking with precision was a delightful experience.

The vibrant Purple Heron also graced the lake with its presence, displaying its striking colors.

The winter birding season at Sukhna Lake spanned from mid-October 2024 to mid-March 2025, and every visit offered something new and exciting. The lake, with its unpredictable surprises, never fails to amaze bird lovers. Regular visits and a bit of patience are all one needs to witness the spectacular avian diversity this place has to offer.

As the winter bids adieu and migratory birds prepare to return to their breeding grounds, I cherish the memories of yet another fantastic birding season at Sukhna Lake, with the hope that next winter will bring even more delightful encounters. Until then, happy birding!
